Job Title: Technical Director / Facility Manager
Reports To: Producing Artistic Director
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Location: Harrisburg, PA
Revised: 6/18/25
About the Role:
Are you a builder, problem-solver, organizer, and creative thinker all rolled into one? Open Stage is looking for a Technical Director / Facility Manager to join our team and help bring our shows—and our spaces—to life.
This is a full-time position for someone who loves the hands-on work of building sets, managing tools, troubleshooting backstage, and making sure a space feels ready for storytelling. Whether you’ve worked as a carpenter, assistant TD, designer, or jack-of-all-trades, we’re looking for someone ready to step into leadership—with plenty of support along the way.
We encourage professional development and skill-building. You’ll have opportunities to grow your leadership, design, or facilities experience depending on your interests.
Typical work hours are Monday–Friday, 10 AM–6 PM, with evening and weekend hours required during tech, strikes, or special events. Flex time is available outside of production periods.
Who We Are:
Open Stage is a regional professional theatre in downtown Harrisburg that produces contemporary plays, musicals, family programming, and educational theatre. We care deeply about our community, the artists we work with, and the stories we tell. Our small-but-mighty team wears many hats and supports each other in making bold, creative, and accessible theatre.
What You’ll Do:
Build & Create
Interpret or create scenic and technical designs for productions across our season.
Lead scenic builds and installations—sometimes from your own design, sometimes from a guest designer’s sketches.
Collaborate with the Production Manager to plan timelines, stay on budget, and solve problems creatively.
Scenic painting, design, props, or additional tech work when needed.
Be present and hands-on during load-ins, tech, and strike.
Run the Shop & Spaces
Keep our shop, backstage, and on-site/off-site storage spaces organized and stocked.
Maintain our tools, equipment, and theatre systems—and coordinate repairs when needed.
Handle light daily upkeep like trash, basic event setup, and keeping the space functional and welcoming.
Occasionally coordinate or help with light facility upgrades outside the theatre spaces (like office or classroom fixes).
Be the point person for visiting contractors or vendors when work needs to be done.
Lead & Support the Crew
Hire and supervise backstage crew, carpenters, painters, overhire crew, and volunteers.
Train crew in safe practices and help build a supportive, professional backstage culture.
Collaborate with staff, directors, stage managers, and designers to make the artistic vision possible—safely and on schedule.
Mentor student and early-career artists who pass through our programs or shop.
Admin
Help plan scenic and tech budgets, order materials, and track receipts.
Keep documentation organized for each production.
Participate in season planning and big-picture conversations with our team.
Support community rentals and events, helping with tech setups and space needs.
What You Bring:
Experience working in technical theatre—could be carpentry, tech direction, electrics, scenic art, or a mix of everything.
Ability to read or draft construction drawings (or willing to learn Vectorworks or SketchUp).
Solid grasp of shop tools, stage rigging, scenic materials, and theatre safety.
Strong communication skills and a positive, problem-solving attitude.
Willingness to do a little bit of everything—build a platform, hang a light, take out the trash, give a student a tour.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and be on your feet during tech and strikes.
A valid driver’s license.
You’ll be based in our downtown theatre and workshop space, with occasional visits to our offsite storage facility.
Other duties as assigned.
Nice to Have (but Not Required):
Welding experience
Familiarity with QLab, ETC consoles, or lighting/sound systems
Experience working with students or in education/theatre-for-young-audiences
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary: $40,000/year
Health insurance
Paid vacation, personal, and sick time
Retirement contribution
Paid parking downtown
Comp tickets to Open Stage productions
Flexibility outside of production weeks (we respect your time)
