Mission: Open Stage of Harrisburg Studio/School is a training program dedicated to developing the student's skill, knowledge, and appreciation of the process of acting and the making of theatre.

Philosophy: Open Stage of Harrisburg Studio/School believes that every student, of any age and ability, should experience personal and artistic growth. Students participate in ensemble work within an environment that supports everyone's contributions. Above all, every student is encouraged to use his or her personal experiences, perspectives, and unique personality to uncover the many layers of creativity.

Students experiment with their imagination and spontaneity as they develop their ability to create interesting characters in specific places pursuing precise goals.

 

 

Advanced Theatre Games

 

Grades 6 - 8

Saturdays 10:00 - 11:00 AM

Students experiment with improvisational games that challenge their ability to connect with their partners on stage. Students develop interesting scenes by learning how to listen, attend, communicate, and entertain.

 

 

High School Improv

 

Grades 9 - 12

Saturdays 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

April 5 - May 10

Students develop their acting technique through the use of improvisational games that challenge them to create stories, characters, and situations that are complex, truthful, and entertaining, Students will also have the opportunity to experiment with the competitive improv game format.

 

 

Summer

Creative Dramatics Summer School

 

Ages 8 - 11

Monday through Thursday 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

June 30 - July 3

$190 ($170 Early Bird)

 

A week of fun and a chance to perform!!  Kids work together to create an original play based on their own ideas.

Performance: Thursday, July 3 at 2:00 PM

 

 

Middle Summer School

 

Ages 12 - 13

Monday  through Friday 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

July 7 - 18

$300 ($280 Early Bird)

 

Two weeks of dramatic play for middle schoolers culminating in an original performance.  Improvisational exercises build collaborative skills, characterizations, and storytelling abilities.

Performance: Friday, July 18 at 11:30 AM

Music Theatre Workshop '08

 

Ages 12 - 17

Monday  through Friday 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

July 21- August 8; BY AUDITION ONLY- call for information

$450 ($430 Early Bird)

 

Students spend three intensive weeks in acting,  singin, and dance classes, then perform the best of Broadway,  Includes a New York field trip and a workshop in the Big Apple! 

Performances:  Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 7 and 8:15 PM

Payment

A student will be guaranteed a place in class upon receipt of payment in full. Tuition does not include materials or texts. There will be no tuition refunds after the start of classes. *To receive Early Bird discounts, payment must be received one week prior to the start date of each class.

Location

All classes meet at Open Stage, 223 Walnut Street, in the street level of the Walnut Street Parking Garage.

NO MORE BULLIES

An interactive assembly for kids K-6.

No More Bullies is a unique assortment of plays, songs and poems designed for young audiences from kindergarten through sixth grade. Created by Fringe Benefits, a coalition of theatre artists, youth, educators, and parents, and based on Cootie Shots, Theatrical Innoculations Against Bigotry, No More Bullies provides a fun and constructive way to promote tolerance and celebrate diversity by presenting role models of many different races, cultures, classes, genders, abilities, religions, ages and appearances.

Assembly length: 45 - 60 minutes

Available time period: 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Maximum Audience Size: 300, but 200 is recommended
Discussion during and following the performance allows the audience to process the information presented in the scenes.
Scripts and study guides are provided to the host school.

Founded in 2001 through a partnership between the Captial Area Intermediate Unit and Open Stage of Harrisburg, The Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA) offers intensive instruction in visual art, dance, music, media arts, and theatre to qualified high school students in the CAIU. Located in several sites in the heart of downtown Harrisburg, the school uses the city as its "classroom", affording its students access to the numerous resources located downtown, and utilizing a yearly theme based on the urban environment. The school's Vision Statement reads:

"The Capital Area School for the Arts will be the significant and innovative provider of multidisciplinary arts education to school entities throughout the area. It will attract the most talented and motivated students and be a model for arts education."
