Mission:  Open Stage of Harrisburg Studio/School is a training program dedicated to developing the student’s skill, knowledge, and appreciation of the process of acting and the making of theatre in both professional and non-professional contexts.

Philosophy:  Open Stage of Harrisburg Studio/School believes that every student, of any age and ability, should experience personal and artistic growth. Students participate in ensemble work within an environment that supports everyone’s contributions.  Above all, every student is encouraged to use his or her personal experiences, perspectives, and unique personality to uncover the many layers of creativity.
 


For Kids

Story Theatre and Lit Alive!
Fall session: September 18 – October 23     Winter session:  Jan 15 – Feb 19

In these classes, students use their favorite books and stories  to create their own performance for an invited audience. Activities include improvisation, scene study, playwriting, and production.  Kids  make their own show based on literature that they know and love!

Story Theatre          
7-9 years   
Using fairy tales, age-appropriate books, and their own imaginations, elementary kids will create     their own theatre for friends and family!  Includes reading and writing activities as well as theatre     techniques and tools. Kids create, rehearse, and perform their own versions  of stories from their favorite authors.

Lit Alive!    
10-13 years   
Dramatic and literary fun for older kids, incorporating the tools of theatre (costumes, lights, sound) with playwriting and acting.  Students will bring their favorite books and stories to life for friends and family.

“Spring Kidpromptu”

Improvisational comedy for kids: performance, with audience participation!!  Students of all experience levels will work together to make theatre “in the moment.”

Teen Acting Studio
14- 17 years
Fall session:  September 18 - October 23  Winter session:  January 15 - February 19
11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Scene study and audition preparation for the serious high school actor.  Recommended for students who wish to perform in Musical Theatre as well. Sophomores and Juniors take note!  Private coaching by arrangement.

For the Returning Young Student

Open Stage offers advanced acting classes for young people who want to study theatre more intensely.  Prerequisite: one previous kids' class or workshop with Open Stage or instructor approval.

STK  (Specialized Training for Kids)
4th- 9th grade   
Oct. 2 – Nov 6 (6 weeks)  12:00-2:00 pm
In-depth exploration of a theatre topic, with guest artists!  This year STK will explore the wonderful world of radio drama, complete with sound effects, scary scenarios, and crazy characters!  Includes an informal performance during the last class.

Theatre by Kids for Everyone!  A select group of students research, rehearse, and perform a fully-staged production of a young people’s play commissioned by Open Stage. Students work with and learn from theatre professionals.  Performances:  May 20, 21, 22  2010

Dancing in Musicals for the Non-Dancer
Kids, 8-14:  Saturday,  Oct 16,  2:00-6:00 pm
Adults, 16 and up:  Sunday, Oct. 17,  2:00- 6:00 pm
Two left feet?  No problem.  Look good in choreography auditions and get the role!  Experienced choreographer Paige Pavlishin will teach dance-challenged participants basic steps of music theatre choreography and tips on “picking up” that  dreaded audition dance combination.  Two classes: one for kids, one for adults.

Fight Call!: Stage Combat   
           

Kids, 10-14:  Saturday, Feb 5, 2:00 - 6:00 pm
Adults, 16 and up: Sunday, Feb 6, 2:00 - 6:00 pm 
Techniques for creating convincing but safe physical contact onstage. The slap, the punch, the fall!  Make it look real, but keep it safe!  Learn from a certified fight trainer.

Acting Technique (Mondays)

An introduction to the Meisner technique of acting, emphasizing spontaneous work with a partner.  Includes a brief overview of American actor training and application of the technique to a script.  A great introduction to acting or a brush up in technique for the experienced performer.

Prerequisite:  Acting Technique
A scene study and performance laboratory, students explore and perform various themes, plays and playwrights, sometimes creating original work.  Requires additional rehearsal commitment in March.

Improvisation for Adults (Wednesdays)

Everybody’s favorite class! Adults can stretch their imaginations in creating scenarios and characters that enlighten and entertain.  Includes a variety of improvisation games and techniques.

Summer Classes for Adults and Kids

“Tween” Scene
Take one, two or three weeks of class!  You pick the sessions to fit your schedule!
Ages 8-12
Monday through Friday 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Session I:  June 27-July 1  (Theatre Games)
Session II:  July 5- 9  (Creating Characters)
Session III:  July 12 – 16  (Musical Theatre singing and staging)
Three weeks of dramatic play for  “tween”-agers culminating in a sharing session for friends and family.  Class exercises build improvisation skills, characterization, and musical theatre abilities.  Students may take any or all three weeks of classes.  Sharing for friends and family:  2:00 pm each Friday.

Music Theatre Workshop 2011: A Regional Summer School of Excellence!
Ages 12-17
Monday through Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
July 18 – August 5
Students spend three intensive weeks in acting, singing, and dance classes, then perform the best of Music Theatre.  Includes a New York field trip to a Broadway musical and an audition workshop in the Big Apple!  MTW has been named a “Regional Summer School of Excellence” for 8 years in a row by the PA Department of Education.  Instructors are all professionals in Music Theatre.

NEW!! Adult Summer Master Classes
Take two, four, or six classes!  You pick the sessions to fit your schedule! Classes are taught by professional actors, singers, and teachers.
Ages 18 and up
Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30 pm
Session I:  June 27 and 29  (Scene Study and Analysis)
Session II:  July 5 and 7  (Auditioning - monologues and cold reading - preparation required+)
Session III:  July 12 and 14  (Master Classes in Music Theatre - enrollment limited, preparation required+)
Three weeks of class for busy adults.  Class exercises build skills in script analysis, auditioning technique, characterization, and musical theatre.  Students may take any or all three weeks of classes. 
$100/$80* per week/$230* for all three weeks
+Preparation:  Session II - each participant must prepare a memorized 1 to 2-minute monologue from
 a published play.  Session III: each participant must prepare a fully memorized song from the Music Theatre repertoire, with sheet music.

Founded in 2001 through a partnership between the Capital Area Intermediate Unit and Open Stage of Harrisburg, The Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA) offers intensive instruction in dance, film & video,
music, theatre, and visual art, to qualified high school students in the CAIU. Located in Strawberry Square (Third and Walnut Streets), in the heart of downtown Harrisburg, the school uses the city as its "classroom", affording its students access to the numerous resources located downtown, and utilizing a yearly theme based on the urban environment. The school's Vision Statement reads:

"The Capital Area School for the Arts will be the significant and innovative provider of multidisciplinary arts education to school entities throughout the area. It will attract the most talented and motivated students and be a model for arts education."
